This is Me - Q&A Series
Last Spring I attended the Christian Writers Workshop that my church hosts and it was so eye opening to be around other people who like to write. It was held once a week for about two months and every week they would bring a speaker and also give a prompt for attendees to write about for the next week. Then anyone could get up and read what they wrote off the prompt. I loved this idea and while I wasn’t brave enough to get up and read anything, I love the idea of challenging myself to write something based off of a simple prompt. I know this is probably used all the time in writing classes etc…but it wasn’t something that really occurred to me until I went to this group.
As I’ve been thinking about getting back into the “writing game” over these past few months, I’ve been wrestling with subjects and WHAT exactly I should be writing about. Since I don’t have a super clear direction on that yet, I’m trying to work in some exercises that I can incorporate into my daily routine that will help me build my writing muscles by practice, practice, practice.
While I have some thoughts and am exploring ideas for longer form essays and pieces on broader subjects, I thought one way that I could practice (and also get in the habit of writing daily whether I felt like it or not) was to answer questions and write things off of prompts.
I got a book a while back called “300 writing prompts” and just recently picked up another book called “This is Me…1001 questions to learn more about yourself” and I figured both of those would be great starting places!
I haven’t 100% decided on an exact schedule for this and timing may be a challenge as well, but my initial goal is to answer 5 questions a day here on this blog/website from the “This is Me” book and then work in a post from the writing prompts book here and there as well.
If I consistently answer the 5 questions/day that would be 200 days of writing and blog posts. WHEW…that is a lot. We will see if I can keep up with it. I really do want to but sometimes you don’t know how something will be until you get started…so…I’m just going to start and go from there!
