This is Me - #truth
This is a post included in the This is Me series where I answer 1001 questions about myself as writing practice. Each post consists of me answering 5 questions about myself. Wanna share what you would answer to any or all of the questions? Do it in the comments section!
DO YOU LIKE TO ARGUE?
With strangers? No. A spirited discussion that challenges me to think and communicate my beliefs with someone who is approaching the discussion in good faith? Yes, I don't mind "arguing" in that circumstance. Although I would say that might fall under the headline of discussion rather than argument.
When I feel passionately about a subject AND I feel like the person I'm arguing with isn't listening to me or is talking over me, I tend to become condescending and passive aggressive...both things I vehemently despite in others so obviously I don't enjoy engaging in those behaviors either. I do my best to approach situations calmly and rationally as to avoid slipping into those behaviors.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE TRUTH?
Truth is that something is true, or aligns with fact or reality. Truth is objective and not up for interpretation. I don't believe that you can have your truth and I can have my truth...there is ONE objective truth. We might have different opinions or understandings of the truth but if something does not line up with fact or reality it is not true. I am 5'4 and no amount of me saying that I'm taller makes me objectively taller.
DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE ASSERTIVE?
I have no issues being assertive in situations where the power dynamics are obvious and my assertiveness is understood and expected. Like when I was a wedding photographer - during the family photos - I had no problem projecting my voice, and directing people, assertively, on what to do, where to stand etc. I actually really enjoyed it.
Now, speaking up and being assertive in situations where it might be perceived to be awkward or the power dynamic is less obvious...I tend to be much less assertive in those types of situations. I am getting better at being assertive in those types of situations as I am getting older, but it is still something i have to actively work on.
IS THERE A SONG THAT REMINDS YOU OF HAPPY TIMES?
There are likely hundreds of songs that remind me of happy times. I believe this is the reason God gave us the ability to turn noise into music. Music can stir up emotions in ways that is so subtle and yet so powerful all at the same time. It is such a beautiful gift.
When I was younger I listened to music non-stop (don't all young people?). Classic Rock, Jazz, Rap, Grunge, Alt-rock/pop....all of it accompanied me through good times and bad. There's no way I could narrow down to one song, but if I had to pick a band - I would say Coldplay. All of their albums stir complex emotions from a time in my life where a lot of change and growth was happening. Oh also, Third Eye Blind - Motorcycle Drive By....that song for sure reminds me of happy and also sad times. Dave Matthews Band...see? I told you...there is no way to narrow it down. Music is an amazing gift.
WHAT WILL ALWAYS MAKE YOU LAUGH?
Paul. My dogs. Our best friends - Travis & Jess. My dad. Smart humor.
