This is Me - tick,tick,tick
This is a post included in the This is Me series where I answer 1001 questions about myself as writing practice. Each post consists of me answering 5 questions about myself. Wanna share what you would answer to any or all of the questions? Do it in the comments section!
WHAT'S THE HOUSE CHORE YOU DISLIKE THE MOST?
In almost every house we have lived in, the laundry is on the main floor and the bedrooms were on the second floor. I don't normally mind doing laundry, but having to haul the clean clothes up the stairs was never appealing to me. Now that we have a ranch and the laundry room is on the larger side, I actually really enjoy laundry so I'm not sure why I'm talking about it as the answer to a question about what I like the least.
Deep cleaning though....now that is something that I loathe. I do a pretty good job at keeping things put away and organized and not overtly messy, but doing a deep cleaning of the floors or the bathrooms...that's just not a part of my journey. The next day it's instantly dirty again, so it feels like a wasted effort to put that much energy into a deep clean. I've hired a cleaner on more than one occasion to help combat this and let me tell you, it's worth every penny!
WHAT SOUND DO YOU DISLIKE THE MOST?
The only sound that bothers me is any sound that is repetitive, especially if I don't know where it's coming from. That will drive me bonkers. It's like a prison that you can't escape, knowing that the tick or the ding or the whir is going to happen again at the exact same interval that it just happened. Makes my skin crawl.
WHAT SOUND DO YOU LIKE THE MOST?
Should I go all cliche and say the sound of the ocean or rain? Because I think that is what most normal people would say if presented with this question.
I'm gonna resist the urge however and go with the sound of any puppy or dog sleeping and dreaming. I don't think that has ever happened in my presence without prompting a huge smile.
WHAT SMELL DO YOU DISLIKE THE MOST?
I really don't think this question can be answered as is. Vomit, poop, sulfur, rotting trash or dead animals...can anyone really rank those into which one is the WORST out of all of them? I doubt it. I can't think of anything that might be a normal smell someone else might like that I dislike, so this question feels almost pointless.
WHAT SMELL DO YOU LIKE THE MOST?
The smell of rain in the desert. There is no better place to deeply inhale the fresh scent of falling rain when you are in a desert area. I've lived in Albuquerque, Ridgecrest and now Waco which all have a relative desert quality (the first two strikingly so) as well as Issaquah, WA and Budd Lake, NJ both of which are stuffed with greenery and plenty of rainfall. Trust me when I say there is nothing quite like the dark clouds rolling in, the rain splattering down, and the dry earth soaking it all in like a huge sigh of relief. If I could capture that smell in a candle..I'd burn it non stop.
HOW DO YOU BELIEVE PEOPLE FALL IN LOVE?
I don't believe people fall in love. I think people have strong attractions to other people. I think the attractions are built on characteristics that you admire or respect which ultimately attracts you to them. We've all met people who we instantly "connect" with and sometimes we meet people who we connect with, but they don't necessarily connect with us.
When you find a person with whom you have mutual connection, that is a strong force that can make you "feel" lots of things, but ultimately love is a choice. It's a decision you make to be committed to a person that you have those foundational connections with. Some of those connection points may morph or change over time, but the decision to love will always be a choice.
